Skill Games Online May Benefit Elderly Players

Playing skill games online may not seem like social support, but it is. When elderly people play puzzle games, brain-teasers or similar games, their memory doesn't decline like it does in people who don't do these things. When they engage with life by staying connected to friends and family, their health and well-being receives a boost that helps retard the effects of aging.

Often, elderly people are isolated. Their children move away and get involved with their own families and jobs. Friends move or die. It isn't as easy to get out and about as it used to be. Sometimes it seems like the rest of the world just doesn't have time for the elderly.

However, there's always someone willing to play a game of checkers or gin rummy online. Other players don't care if you're 28 or 80, as long as they can find someone to play a game that they like. Many older people play with their grandchildren or children online. They can chat and play at the same time. Of course, if they're playing backgammon or chess, they may want to save the chat for after the game.

One of the best things about playing skill games online is the cost. Most sites have free games and even the tournaments don't cost much to enter. In real life, even lunch at a fast food place can cost more than the elderly have to spend. But anyone can find a site where they can play games all day for free or very little. And they can even win a little cash or a prize at some sites for a small fee.

Two of the most popular games are solitaire and games where items are swapped to make three of a kind. These games are simple enough so that people can chat while they play them. This makes them good for social contact for people who live alone. Anyone with an internet connection can find a game site where they can meet literally millions of people who are doing the same thing. Many people check in every day to the same site to see what their friends are up to.

News of the weather, kids, grandkids, illnesses and happy events are shared. The people who play regularly form a community that cares about each other. In addition to the regular games, there are often special games with special prizes or cash rewards that spice up the play. However, although prizes and cash are nice, it's the social aspect and the opportunity to sharpen their minds that attracts most people to skill games online. If you haven't tried them yet, you should give them a try. Sharpen your mind, exercise your memory and make some new friends playing skill games online.

Money Management And Payday Loans

There are a number of ways that people can use to manage money to stay out of debt and even establish savings over time.

Establish a Budget

The first, and maybe the most important step, is to set a budget for yourself and stick by it. Take a look at your household income and outgo. Set the budget up to accommodate your payday schedule. In other words, if you get paid once a month, then you have to budget accordingly so that you wont run out of money before the end of the month. If you get paid every two weeks, or every week, figure out which of your bills have to be paid on each payday. It is absolutely essential to set some money aside for emergencies. Even if it is only $20 per payday, having some cushion will keep you from having to borrow money when something unforeseen occurs. There are all kinds of budget sheets available to help you figure things out and many of them are free on the Internet. However, it is not hard to make your own. Just make a list of your income and when it arrives, as well as a list of what has to be paid when. Check each item off and date it when it is paid. Dont forget to budget adequate amounts for items like food, gas, entertainment, etc. If you have those items in your budget, its also a good way to track how much you are actually spending on them each month.

Get Organized

A good way to begin the budgeting process is to sort out all of your legal and financial papers and file them so you can find what you need when you need it. For example put bills that are due on the 10th of the month in one folder, and bills that are due on the 25th in another folder. Once you have paid a particular bill, shred it and dispose of it, in order to save confusion. Any other financial information, like savings accounts, mutual funds, etc. should also be stored in appropriately labeled folders. At the first of the year, when your tax documents start coming in, put them all in one folder with the tax forms. When April 15 rolls around, you wont have to dig through piles of mail on your desk to come up with all of the appropriate documents and forms. Items like insurance policies should also be labeled and file so that you can readily find them if and when you need them.

Find Ways to Save Money

Do some brainstorming about your expenses and how you could possibly cut back on them. It is wise to write them down on paper because it is less easy to dismiss them that way. For example, can you cut down on the amount of gas you use by taking public transportation? If you eat out often, consider making more meals at home. Examine your buying habits. Do you go shopping when you are depressed? Do you go grocery shopping when you are hungry? Do you purchase items advertised on the shopping channel without every leaving your easy chair? These are all practices you can change. Find healthier activities for when you are feeling down go for a long walk instead of going shopping. Make a grocery list and carefully plan what groceries you need for the coming week, then go to the store and buy them. Coupons can be advantageous if you buy name brand items, but store brands are often cheaper in the long run. Watch the weekly sales flyers in the local newspaper and buy items like meat when they are on sale. Its handy to have something in the freezer to fix, and less costly in the long run than making a quick trip to the store after work and picking up only what you need for that nights meal.

Find Ways to Make More Money

Get an extra part time job, or work overtime at your regular job, if possible. Clear out your attic or your garage and have a yard sale. You may be happily surprised at the amount of money you can bring in. These days, many people make money selling items through online auction sites like ebay, and dont have to sort and tag and have people running all over your yard for a day. If there is a local farmers market, consider something you can sell there. If you have extra produce from your garden, or are a good baker, you will find that people are readily willing to buy things that you can grow or make. If you make extra money, dont increase your expenses. Either use it to pay off bills, or put it away for savings.

Choose Credit Carefully

If you have to have a credit card, shop around for the best deal. Some credit cards have yearly fees that have to be paid whether you ever use the card or not. Interest rates vary widely. Make sure you know what the interest rate is and shop around for the lowest. If you charge something, pay it off before the end of the month, then it wont cost you any interest on the card. Dont use more than one credit card. Its too easy to get into the cycle of living on the credit cards and never really paying more than the interest on them. This is a practice that will get you deeper into debt in the long run.

Payday Loans

If you have an emergency and need to get a payday loan, make sure you investigate and find the one that is the best deal for you. The amount of interest charged varies widely from company to company and so does the repayment period. Find the loan that gives you the most flexibility for the least fees. Try to never roll your payday loan over, but pay it off in full by the due date.

Will America Survive?

Let me start by saying I'm 59 years old and consider myself to be a rational, practical, common sense person. I believe that God created us in his likeness. I believe in equal rights, the Constitution and the U. S. A. We are not always right in our decisions but I believe we are a good member in the overall world standing. I believe in less, not more government inclusion in our lives and rights. There are numerous sayings I could quote, and I'm sure most of you have heard them. One such saying is "those who don't learn from history, are doomed to repeat it".

As far back as I can remember, it has been said "what is wrong with this generation of kids?" This country is doomed when this generation takes over. We have survived each generation that has come before me and after me. We have had brilliant minds that have enabled us to walk on the moon, build a space station, create computers and the internet. We have gone from records, reel to reel tape, to 8 tracks, cassettes, cd's, and ipods. We have gone from a crank phone complete with an operator, to rotary dial, to push button, tone, pulse to cell phones complete with built in cameras and internet availability. We have seen some amazing, incredible technological advances. In that area, we are in good hands but those are not the areas that concern me.

The areas that concern me are: our morals, values, principles. The thing that keeps a society, it's people and a country grounded. These are the areas where I have to question where are we as a country headed?

Let's take a look at the recent news headlines. The California Supreme Court just over ruled a lower court on the topic of gay marriage. They also ignored the vote of the people who voted it down. Regardless, of where you stand on this issue, doesn't the fact of what this means concern you? The court is telling you that your vote doesn't matter. What matters is how judges rule. Excuse me, but this goes against everything our country was founded on. Personally, I'm not in favor of a legal gay marriage. I'm not a bible scholar but when God created Adam and Eve, he told them to "be fruitful and multiply". I was a health and physical education major and unless there has been a radical new development I'm unaware of, a same sex marriage cannot do that. I'm not anti-gay or whatever the politically correct saying is. I'm fine with them living together, a man and woman living together don't qualify for tax breaks either, so my feeling is where is the difference?

Texas is next, is anyone paying attention to what's going on with the children from the FLDS compound? Religious freedoms are all well and good however, multiple wives, arranged marriages, girls being abused by men more than twice their age. There are at least six underage girls who are pregnant, there are other underage girls who have had children and in some cases multiple children. Has anyone else noticed other than color the women all dress basically the same and wear their hair the same way. Does anyone still remember Jim Jones? I grew up in Amish and Mennonite country but I never heard nor have I seen reported things of this magnitude in either of those communities. Isn't it our duty to protect our nation's children? They don't have a vote, their voices are not heard but they are being sent back to live under the same conditions they were in previously.

How about the recent murders of college students, most of which have been women? The mysterious and questionable disappearance of couples and individuals across our country? The beatings of students, which are being videoed for the sole purpose of putting them on the internet so that the beaters can get their 15 minutes of fame? The sexually explicit "dance" at a Memphis school by students while teacher chaperons stood and did nothing. Isn't anyone offended by anything anymore? What has happened to right and wrong?

I worked in cable television for 25 years from 1972-1997, I've seen the changes. People say it's because we live in a 24/7 news cycle. CNN first aired almost 28 years ago. Prior to that, we had news on television early morning, noon, early and late evening and news breaks based on importance. We also had radio and newspapers. We did not exactly live in the dark ages folks. We need to get our moral compass, values, principles and priorities in order and quickly. Unless we make these changes, "we will repeat history".
